Has
Newbery
Lost Its Way?
Our Goal: Answer the question, “Has the Newbery Lost Its Way?” using research, interviews, and investigation.
The Process:
1. Read a book that was chosen as a Newbery winner.
2. Record your thoughts and reflections as you read the book.
3. Evaluate the book using the criteria set by the Newbery Guidelines and the criteria we choose as a class.
The Task:
As the unit progresses, we will decide as a class how we would like to respond to the article. We will want to create a product that expresses the findings in our research.
Organization:
1. Divide your chosen book into three sections and record your page numbers on your handout:
Section 1-
Section 2-
Section 3-
2. After each section, you will need to complete a reading response to help you record your thoughts and reflections on the novel. The responses will be focused on the criteria determined by the class and the Newbery guidelines. These will be treated as more than just personal journal entries. They will be assessed for conventions, ideas, style, and organization.
3. As you research in the computer lab, you will need to record your research on notes and store them on your H: drive. Don’t forget to include the sources you used to locate the information.
