BIG 6 Steps

SURVIVAL!
Could You Survive in the Tribe?

#1: Task Definition

Task Definition is the first and most important part of the research process.  If you don't know what you are doing, are you going to do it right?

Task: You would like to apply to be on a reality television series about Native American life in the southeastern United States.  You think you'd be an awesome candidate because you've already done quite a bit of reading about Native American life in your Georgia Studies class.  Now you're up against your whole class, and only five candidates will be chosen.  You know you'll need to really impress the TV producers (Mr. Carter and Ms. Pals).  That means--you're going to read the rules carefully!

Application Process:

  1. Choose one tribe from the list of Native American tribes east of the Mississippi: SOUTHEAST: Alabama-Coushatta, Apalachee, Calusa, Catawba, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Chitimacha, Choctaw, Creek, Lumbee, Natchez, Seminole, Timucua, Tunica-Biloxi, Yamasee, Yazoo, and Yuchi.   NORTHEAST: Abenaki, Huron, Iroquois, Kickapoo, Lanape, Mahican, Maliseet, Massachusetts, Menominee, Miami, Micmac, Mohegan, Narragansett, Nipmuc, Ojibwa, Ottaw, Passmaquoddy, Pennacook, Penobscot, Peoria, Pequot, Potawatomi, Powhatan, Sac and Fox, Shawnee, Susquehannock, Wampanoag, Wappinger, and Winnebago.

  2. Use the list of questions about Native American life generated by the class (click here!)

  3. Click on #2 to know what resources are allowed in this competition

  4. Click on #3 to help you find information in those resources

  5. Take notes using this chart (click here) - you don't need to print any articles or websites!

  6. Use your notes to form a five-paragraph paper about Native American life in your tribe.

  7. The format of your paper should be organized like this:

I.  Introduction - Mention three main points and your thesis statement
II.  Geography of your tribe's region
III.  Culture
IV.  Lifeway
V.  Conclusion - Briefly summarize each main point (1-2 sentences) and close with an update.

    8.  Your research papers will be due: September ___, 2005
