Who is the Real Renaissance Man?

The Renaissance was a time period of “rebirth” or the ancient Greek and Roman values of art, literature, science, and education.  During this incredible time period of human achievement, two great Italian men stand out, Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci.  In this research project you will learn a great deal about the two men and their incredible works of art, architecture, ideas, and inventions.  It is indisputable that both men were geniuses in their own way, but just for fun, we are going to debate to see who should be considered the Real Renaissance Man?

____   Step 1:   Write your assigned artist on your worksheet.

____   Step 2:   Complete the Significant Person Worksheet (this should look very familiar) in addition to this, complete the resources form on the back of the sheet.  Remember you must have a resource for each of the designated types, refer to the resource worksheet for guidelines.

STEP #3  What is a Primary Source Document?

Definition:  A primary source document is a document that actually was created by the person or was created by someone witnessing the event or person in real life.  These actual documents are necessary for historians to recreate scenarios and understand what really happened so that we may study factual events, not events that we cannot confirm to be true.

Assignment:  On a piece of printer paper, you will create a letter written from your significant person to another real person from the time period.  If you have correctly done your research you should have found someone in their life that they might have worked with, they might have been in love with or related to that your person might have written a letter to that describes the creation of one of your assigned person’s masterpieces.  This is how we learn about why they were created and how hard and long they worked on the masterpiece.  Make sure you are as accurate as possible, of course, you may have to make up a few things. Remember you must include factual people, places, times, and masterpieces.

____   Step 1:   First brainstorm and organize your ideas into notes or a concept web, then using your notes write a rough draft of your letter on a blank sheet of paper (from your notebook).

____   Step 2:   Ask your parent or guardian to read your letter and help you revise or make changes to your paper.  Remember, you will be graded on your quality of writing as well as your accuracy of information found in you letter.

____    Step 3:  In class, you will make your piece of paper look really old!

____    Step 4:   After making all corrections on you rough draft, copy your final draft onto your old looking piece of paper.  To best complete this, you must use black ink (not a marker).

____    Step 5:  Present your Primary Source to the class.
