North Africa and Egypt Webquest


TASK: Your mission is to help Fred, a world traveling backpacker, across the countries of North Africa: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt. Answer the following questions carefully to keep Fred safe and on schedule!
Turn to page 201 in your Social Studies textbook to trace the journey of your backpacker.
1. Fred's plane lands in Casablanca, Morocco. Fred is hungry and decides to find food in the market place. What kind of food will he find? Describe a meal for Fred or he will go hungry!

2. Fred decides to travel north to the capital Rabat and then to Tangier. When Fred reaches the city, he becomes lost. Use the map on page 201 or www.google.com/maps to help Fred. If he is standing on a dock in Tangier and faces north, what major features surround him?

3. Oops! Even with your careful directions, Fred wanders over the Atlas Mountains and into the Sahara Desert. Dying of thirst, Fred is about to give up hope when he runs into a caravan of Bedouin traders. Who are the Bedouin and what do they do in the desert?

4. The Bedouin traders help Fred find his way into Algiers, Algeria. While wandering around the city's old district, the Casbah, Fred finds that some people know French. Find the reason why in the Encyclopedia Britannica Online (hint: search "Government and History").
5. Keep Fred safe. The countries of North Africa have certain dangers. Search the Lonely Planet travel guide and give Fred a warning for Egypt.

8. Fred stops at a bookstore in Cairo (click here for a picture...it's the shop on the right!). The shop owner tells him that he must buy a book by Naguib Mahfouz. Fred wants to know more about this famous writer from Egypt. Give Fred an interesting fact about this Nobel Prize winner.

9. After traveling down the Nile River near Cairo, Fred decides to stop at the pyramids to see the tombs of the famous pharaohs, or kings, of Egypt. Fred enjoys trying to read the hieroglyphs, or the pictures the Egyptians used for writing.
