Gene Cathcart Named Head Football Coach for JHS

Coach Cathcart was named head coach of the Jefferson Dragons on January 12. Coach Cathcart has been the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for the past two seasons for the Dragons. Coach Cathcart has had an amazing coaching career and the Dragon Nation is excited to have him leading us into the 2017 season.

  • Set school record for most wins in a season (11) & school record for most successful season two years (21)
  • Tied school record for most playoff wins by a coach (4)
  • Set school offensive records for points per game, total yards, points per game and numerous others

At Greenwood High School {2009-2013}: (58-12; 4 Region Championships; 3 State Championship Game Appearances; 1 State Championship; 3 Upper-State Championships)

  • Coached first undefeated 15-0 state championship season in the tradition-rich & storied history of school
  • School record for winning percentage and three consecutive State Championship game appearances
  • His team owns six school record for most wins in a season
  • His team owns the top six seasonal school records for most points scored, highest scoring average, total offensive yards, rushing yards and passing yards
  • Owns school record for longest home winning streak at J.W. Babb Stadium (26 games in a row)

At Seneca High School: {2013-20114} (9-3)

  • Took team that had averaged only five wins a year for the last 10 years, and won nine games in 2014
  • Set school records for most total offense in a season, most passing yards, most points per game and scored touchdown on school record 14 consecutive offensive possessions
  • Won only the second playoff win in over a decade and the first playoff win in 12 years over a team with a winning record and first in 15 years on the road.
  • The Bobcats also beat reigning Upper-State AAA Champion, and archrival Daniel High School, for only the second time in ten years, and the first time in five years

As an Assistant Coach & Offensive Coordinator:

  • His teams have a 272-90 record (109-39 as a Head Coach & 163-51 as an Offensive Coordinator)
  • As Offensive Coordinator/Quarterback Coach: four State Championships, three state runners up finishes and ten Region Championships
  • Led the NCAA Division 2 in total offense and passing yardage as well as breaking or setting 33 school and/or South Atlantic Conference records at Presbyterian College
  • As a Quarterback Coach, has developed six Shrine Bowl Quarterbacks, six SCACA North South All-Star Quarterbacks, a Mr. Football Winner & Finalist, the first runner up for the prestigious Harlon Hill Trophy (NCAA Division 2 Heisman Trophy), and multiple college conference and high school state, area, and region players of the year
  • Quarterbacks he has tutored have led the NCAA in Total Offense and Passing Yardage, led the NJCAA in Total Offense and Passing Yardage as well as being named All-American at both the college and high school levels
  • 15 high school quarterbacks coached by Cathcart have earned full college scholarships
  • He has served as the Head of Quarterback Instruction for over 22 years at 3 of the most respected quarterback camps in the Southeast

At Jefferson High School: {2015 to Present) (10-2/12-2) 22-4

  • Teams finished 12-2 Region Champions and State Final Four in first year in AAAA competition & 10-2 and was ranked fourth in the state by Associated Press, GASVA Power Ranking and Max-preps and fifth in Georgia by Atlanta Journal Constitution
  • Teams averaged over 35 points and 400 yards of total offense per game & had AAA State Offensive MVP & Region and Area Offensive Players of the Year

As a High School & College Player:

  • Attended The Citadel on a full football scholarship, as a quarterback
  • Was named Most Valuable Player of the 1986 Spring C-Day Game at The Citadel
  • Was selected the 1985 State AAA Player and Back of the Year in South Carolina
  • Was selected to play in the 1985 SCACA North-South All-Star game & named starting quarterback
  • Cathcart was named 1985 Region 1-AAA, Upper-State AAA, Anderson Area, & Tri-County Area Player of the Year
  • Was three time Most Valuable Player at Daniel High School & was selected permanent team captain
  • Was named All-Conference 1-AAA in three sports (football, basketball & baseball) & All-State in two sports (football & baseball)
  • Charter member of and first ballot selection to Daniel High School's Hall of Fame
  • Won the Daniel Alumni Lion's Pride Award for bringing honor and distinction to his alma mater
