IMPORTANT: Reopening Schools

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we have worked to refine our plans for reopening Jefferson City Schools. Our system and school leaders continue to work with local and state officials to monitor circumstances surrounding COVID-19 in order to make the most informed decisions. Our plan to reopen schools for face-to-face instruction on Friday, July 31, 2020 is based on the most current information; however, we acknowledge that the situation is subject to change. We will continue to collaborate with appropriate officials in order to make adjustments to these plans as necessary. We are still awaiting additional guidance, including a matrix that will serve as a monitoring tool to guide system decisions about school closures, which will be provided by the Georgia Department of Public Health and the Georgia Department of Education.

Safety Procedures & Protocols

Attached, you will find the Jefferson City Schools COVID-19 Operational Guidelines, which specify the enhanced safety procedures that will be implemented in an effort to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. In addition, it was our intent to send the protocols to be used when a COVID-19 case is suspected or confirmed; however, there have been changes today at the state level regarding these guidelines. The changes at the state level will impact our local protocols for addressing positive COVID-19 cases and the impact on classroom and school closures. We will send the revised protocols once the state officially releases this information. Please keep in mind that the operational guidelines will be consistently implemented throughout the school system.

Each individual school will have additional safety measures (e.g., traffic flow patterns, arrival/dismissal, cafeteria and transportation procedures) in place that will be communicated to parents/guardians prior to the start of school. If you have specific questions or concerns related to school-level procedures, please contact your child’s school. Each classroom will be equipped with a cleaning kit to provide additional protection for students and staff throughout the school day. In addition, the school system will be providing additional safety supplies (e.g., hand sanitizer stations, directional arrows, social distancing signage) for each building. Principals and department supervisors will be communicating more specific information regarding additional safety procedures.

Face Coverings

The school system recognizes the importance of face coverings in mitigating the spread of the virus, and we strongly encourage our staff and students to wear them, particularly in areas where social distancing is not feasible. We will be providing one face covering per staff member and student.

Open House/Student Registration

The school system will be changing the format of the open house/student registration event in order to better accommodate individual circumstances and schedules of our families as well as to adhere to our guidelines for limiting the number of visitors in the buildings at one time. There will be multiple opportunities for parents/guardians and students to connect with principals and teachers prior to the first day of school. Specific details regarding these opportunities will be emailed to parents/guardians the week of July 13th. In an effort to help our families prepare, student schedules for the 2020-2021 school year will be released in the afternoon of July 20th.

Alternative Instructional Plan

We respectfully recognize that there will be students who are considered high risk and/or have extenuating circumstances that may necessitate an alternative plan for instruction. We will be happy to work with families to discuss individual needs. Please contact Mr. Trevor Metzger, Director of Special Education, at tmetzger@jeffcityschools.org to determine if the alternative plan will meet the needs of your child(ren).

Please review the attached documents and contact Dr. Donna McMullan, Superintendent, at dmcmullan@jeffcityschools.org or 706-367-2880, if you have questions or need additional information. It is important for all of us to remain flexible and be prepared to adjust and adapt to the rapidly changing circumstances surrounding COVID-19 and the impact on education. This is a challenging time for everyone, and we appreciate the opportunity to partner with our families to provide a positive learning experience for our students.

Sincerely,

Jefferson City Schools
