JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL COUNCIL MINUTES

TUESDAY, February  20, 2007 - 7:00 P.M.  JHS Library

CALL TO ORDER

The meeting was called to order by Dr. Kevin Smith, Chairperson. Members present were Anita Duck, Laing Hayes, Tammy Babb, and Tom Kimmel.

Members absent were Roger Bright, Christina Healan, and Lisa Stringer.

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

The Pledge of Allegiance was directed by Dr. Smith.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES / AGENDA

Minutes from the previous meeting on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 were presented. Tom Kimmel submitted motion to approve, seconded by Laing Hayes. Motion passed.

NEW BUSINESS

Dr. Smith gave a report on the upcoming Parent Advisement Sessions to be held in the JHS

Cafeteria. This year staff advisors will be meeting with parents and students on an appointment

basis which will allow for less wait time and a greater focus on the advisement process. JHS staff

will be trained in the process during Odyssey For Success on Tuesday, February 20th and 27th as

well as in a faculty meeting on Thursday, February 22nd. The advisement schedule is as follows:

                                    Thursday, March 1st                 Rising 12th Graders       3:00 – 9:00 pm

                                    Tuesday, March 6th                  Rising 11th Graders       3:00 – 9:00 pm

                                    Thursday, March 8th                 Rising 10th Graders       3:00 – 9:00 pm

                                    Tuesday, March 20th                Rising 9th Graders         3:30 – 9:00 pm

                                    Thursday, March 22nd               Make Up Session         3:00 – 9:00 pm

There will be a special informational session for all rising 9th grade parents Thursday, March 15th

In the JHS Gymnasium. Counselors and administrators from JHS will be present at this session

to present information to 8th grade parents and students.

Dr. Smith reported that course sequences in Social Studies and Science have been changed

beginning in 2007-08 for all incoming 9th grade students. The changes include all 9th graders

to take Citizenship and Biology beginning in 2007-08. The sequence for Social Studies include:

                                    9th Grade                      Citizenship

                                    10th Grade                    World History (College Path)

                                                                        World Geography (Technical Path)

                                    11th Grade                    US History

                                    12th Grade                    Economics

The sequence for Science include:

                                    9th Grade                      Biology

                                    10th Grade                    Physical Science

                                    11th Grade                    Chemistry

                                    12th Grade                    Physics, Environmental Science, AP

The membership discussed the school store issue and if the Council would like to oversee this

project beginning in the 2007-08 school year. Laing Hayes presented information gathered on the

operation of the JMS and JES school stores. It was decided to hold a special work session on

Monday, March 5th at 3:30 pm in order to examine the process in more depth. Parent members

from JMS and JES will be present at this work session to share ideas and experiences. There was

a feeling by the membership present to make a decision on the school store initiative before the

end of this school year as the terms of all council members expire in May 2007.

The following events were announced to the membership:

a)         GHSGT tutoring session will be held Saturday, March 10th from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm

            The administration of the GHSGT will be the week of March 20-23.

b)         The ASVAB Test will be offered to all 11th grade students on Wednesday, March 7th

            in the JHS Cafeteria. This test is offered free of charge by the Armed Forces and is an

            excellent test to measure student occupational strengths and abilities.

c)         Drama production ‘Fools’will be presented Thursday through Saturday, March 22 – 24

            at the Commerce Culture Center at 7:30 pm each night. The production will also include a musical.

d)         JHS is sponsoring a trip to Europe during spring break for 19 seniors and 4 chaperones.

            This trip is an extension of the World War II class that is being taught by Bob Pittard, a

            teacher in the social studies department. This trip will be an annual event for seniors

            which will focus on sites in Germany and France that were instrumental in WWII. The dates of this year’s trip are Saturday, March 31 through Tuesday, April 10th.   

 

DEVELOP AGENDA FOR NEXT MEETING

The next meeting was announced to be Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at 7:00 pm in the Media Center.

There will be a special School Store Workshop Meeting on Monday, March 5, 2007 at 3:30 pm in the Media Center.

There was a motion by Tammy Babb, seconded by Anita Duck, to adjourn meeting at 8:00 p.m. Motion passed.
