JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL COUNCIL MINUTES

TUESDAY, April 24, 2007 - 7:00 P.M.  JHS Library

CALL TO ORDER

The meeting was called to order by Dr. Kevin Smith, Chairperson. Members present were Laing Hayes, Tammy Babb, and Anita Duck.

Members absent were Roger Bright, Lisa Stringer, Tom Kimmel and Christina Healan.

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

The Pledge of Allegiance was directed by Dr. Smith.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES / AGENDA

Minutes from the previous meeting on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 were presented. Tammy Babb submitted motion to approve, seconded by Anita Duck. Motion passed.

NEW BUSINESS

Dr. Smith gave a report to the membership on the upcoming testing calendar which included:

End Of Course Testing   - May 8, 9, 14, 15

Advanced Placement Exams – May 7, 8, 10, 15, 16

Final Exams – May 15, 16 (Seniors)

                         May 17, 18 (Underclassmen) Students will be dismissed at 11:45 am

Extended Summer School will be offered during the dates of May 29 through June 8. Students will be eligible to attend summer school if they have attained a 65 grade in a core curriculum course. Sessions will be for 3 hours in the morning (8 – 11am) and in the afternoon (12 – 3 pm) with each session costing $50. A student may take a maximum of two sessions.

Dr. Smith reported that Jefferson High School will be conducting a safety drill on Thursday, May 3rd at 8:30 am which will include a Code Red (Lockdown) and Code Orange (Evacuation). GEMA representatives will be present to observe and give recommendations at the conclusion of the safety drill.

The school store and annual report will be discussed at greater length at the May 22 meeting when there is a greater number of members present. The annual report will be presented to the Jefferson City Schools Board at their monthly meeting in July 2007. Laing Hayes gave the membership a copy of last years report and asked that members make any additions or changes that are needed and return to her in time to discuss at May 22 meeting.

The following events will be taking place at Jefferson High School in the near future:

a)           Dragon Day (8th Grade Orientation) will take place Friday, April 27th from 12 – 3 pm.

b)          Prom will take place Saturday, April 28th from 8:30 – 11 pm at the Jefferson Civic Center.

c)           The annual 9th Grade Self Improvement Program will take place Wednesday, May 2nd on the UGA campus. All 9th grade students will be bused over to UGA to spend time in small groups led by UGA students discussing topics such as decision making, peer pressure, and self esteem. This has been a very successful program over the last 3 years that we have participated.

d)          Yearbook Dedication Assembly will be Friday, May 4th at 9:30 am in the gym.

e)           Honors Night will take place Monday, May 7th in the Cafeteria at 7 pm.

 

DEVELOP AGENDA FOR NEXT MEETING

The next meeting was announced to be Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at 7:00 pm in the Media Center.

Dr. Smith indicated that the framework of the annual report to the school board will be discussed at the May meeting. The annual report will be presented to the school board at the June or July board meeting.

ADJOURNMENT

There was a motion by Tammy Babb, seconded by Anita Duck, to adjourn meeting at 7:45 p.m. Motion passed.
