The latest word from our Principal, Ms. Diane Oliver....

It is a privilege and a pleasure to facilitate the leadership at Jefferson Elementary School.  The 2007-08 school year is expected to be one of the best ever. As always, a spirit of community permeates the school culture as we continue our commitment to excellence.  Jefferson Elementary School is structured to provide staff, students, parents, and the community at large with many different opportunities for active participation in the school improvement process that is designed to meet the needs of all learners.

There are many ways beyond home support in which you can become involved in your child’s school experience.

  •     The PTO meets once a quarter in an effort to enhance communication, to plan school-related family involvement opportunities, and to coordinate fund raising projects in support of school programs.

  •      The JES R US, a parent initiated and facilitated school store enterprise, engages students in an authentic learning experience in direct support of school initiatives.

  •      The Helping Hands Program, a community initiated and organized student tutorial program, provides an avenue for increasing the level of student support from class to class.

  •       Likewise, the Jefferson Elementary School Council, made up of parents, teachers, and community leaders, provides still another avenue for direct involvement.

  •      Monthly committee meetings enable teachers, parents, and community members to work together on one aspect of the school culture in support of school improvement.

  •       Other opportunities include but are not limited to the following:  serving as a media mom, chaperoning a field trip, proctoring for state student assessments, participating as a guest speaker, providing classroom support, and supporting our efforts to provide a safe and inviting indoor and outdoor school climate.

Recognizing that it takes a village to raise a child, we welcome and encourage this level of teamwork.

The commitment to academic excellence is central to all our efforts.  However, we recognize the importance of balance in a child’s life.  There are many outside opportunities for your child(ren) to become involved in community programs.  Some of the outside programs that operate on or near the school campus include but are not limited to the JES After School and Summer School Program, Little League Programs, the Boys and Girls Club, the Scouts Programs, the Jefferson Recreation Program, Summer Camps, and the Public Library Summer Program.

I look forward to working with you and your child(ren) this year.  Feel free to contact me with questions or concerns related to your child(ren)’s educational experience at Jefferson Elementary School at 706-367-8242 or by FAX at 706-367-5405.

Sincerely,

Diane Oliver
