 Ms. DeMaris Gurley

I am honored to facilitate the leadership at Jefferson Academy.  Our new facility, with a similar image to the former Martin Institute - the forerunner school of the existing school system, is truly a credit to our past.  Jefferson Academy continues to raise a level of excitement as we occupy and utilize the various rooms.  Along with the new structural face, the 2007-08 school year is expected to bring new and innovative ideas to students, parents, and community.

As in the past, a true sense of community permeates the school as we strive to continue our commitment to excellence in all programs.  It is our goal as educators to serve as an example to your children and to uphold the school system's mission, "exposure to excellence promotes excellence."  The presence of high expectations is cited near the top of our essential agreements, along with such related factors as a safe and orderly environment, a school wide focus on basic skill acquisition, and frequent monitoring of student progress.

As a parent, you too are an important influence in your child's success in both school and life.  In this role, you have a fresh opportunity every day to get involved with you child(ren).  We encourage you to become involved with us as we strive for excellence in all areas.

Jefferson Academy has many opportunities for every parent to become involved in the school's mission.  Opportunities for involvement include but are not limited to the following:

  • academic support of children in the home

  • facilitate School Store program

  • mentor through Lindsey's Legacy Program

  • support school improvement through monthly committee meetings

  • attend PTO meetings and events

  • volunteer in the Media Center

  • chaperone school based field trips

  • proctor student assessments (ITBS and/or CRCT).

  • volunteer in the classroom

  • volunteer as a guest speaker for special events and areas of study

  • attend conferences and curriculum nights

  • participate in family events (family reading night, fall carnival, school dance, book fairs, field days, etc.

The commitment to academic excellence is priority at Jefferson Academy.  We look forward to working with you and your child(ren) during the 2007-08 school year.  Feel free to contact me with any question you may have concerning your child(ren)'s progress while at Jefferson Academy.

Sincerely,

DeMaris Gurley, Principal
