Dear
Parents,
It has been a great pleasure to work in the
Jefferson City School System for the past three years and to
enter into my second year as the Professional School Counselor
at Jefferson Academy. I believe that children need to be given
the tools required to solve problems as they move into
adolescence. These next few years will be trying on you and your
child. However, if we work together, our three years at Jefferson
Academy will be a positive experience.
I plan
to present these tools during monthly classroom guidance
lessons. Each month a new tool will be presented from a research
-based counseling curriculum, Botvin Life Skills Training (www.lifeskillstraining.com).
The
tools covered will be:
-
Self Esteem/Being Unique
-
Goal Setting
-
Decision Making
-
Smoking/Tobacco Prevention
-
Advertising Tricks
-
Stress Management
-
Communication Skills
-
Conflict Resolution/Peer Pressure
-
Assertive Behavior
I also
will be seeing students individually and in small groups.
Parents and teachers can refer students for counseling.
Individual counseling will consist of a brief meeting with the
student to discuss the child’s concerns; this will be a one time
session, unless a follow up is needed. Small groups will occur
as needed. Small groups will consist of 4-5 students with
similar concerns. Small groups will meet approximately 4-6 times. Possible
small group topics include: Behavior/Anger, Getting Along with
Others, Newcomers, and Organizational Skills.
Jefferson Academy will also participate in the Core Essentials
Character Education program. Each month we will learn a new
character word and the word will be discussed in the classroom.
The teachers will have Value-able Cards to pass out when they
see our character words in action. I would like to thank Margaret
Phillips, at Commerce Chick-fil-A, for Core Essentials. For more
information, visit:

The
2008-2009 school year will be full of new adventures and
programs. The Lunch at
the Ritz program is available to third, fourth, and fifth grade
students. The Lunch at the Ritz is a monthly recognition program aimed at
awarded those children who are well behaved, responsible, and good citizens. Classroom teachers will nominate one student each
month. The winning children will receive lunch. Volunteers and donations
are needed and welcome!
